Bee Sting

Friday afternoon, Just as we sat down to dinner, we had a knock at the door. There was a family there with their nine month old son. The parents told us that they thought that the kid had been stung by a bee. His right hand and arm were a little swollen and red. I did a quick assessment on the kid (trying not to do too much to him so that he wouldn't be upset) to see if he had any signs of anaphylaxis. His lung sounds were clear, and his rash hadn't spread any further. His parents didn't want to take him to the hospital so I informed them on what to look for in case he should get worse. They were told not to come back to the station if things got worse but to call 911. They agreed and signed out AMA.

Here is a rough outline of what happens in anaphylaxis. This is a subject near and dear to my heart because I have suffered this very thing (when I was five years old).

My patient didn't look anything like this baby.

These last two shots were to let parents know what to look for if their kid is having an allergic reaction. If this occurs, call 911.

  1. Aidan got stung for the first time a few days ago and I watched him very closely. His leg swelled a bit in a two inch diameter, but nothing else thank goodness. is rubbing mud to soothe a beesting an old wives tale?

  2. I read somwhere that it does help but medically speaking I don't know. The correct dose of Benadryl should help quite a bit with the swlling and redness.
